Notting Hill – Year 2

Mr Shaw's Class

To help children transition back into school routines we are prioritising their emotional wellbeing through teaching and exploring emotions and self-regulation. Children will be taught to use the Zones of Regulation and how different parts of the brain work. Children will also be given free choice time each day, where they can choose to interact with the writing, maths, reading, transient art or fine motor areas.

In year 2 this term we are learning about explorers, with a focus on Christopher Columbus. Children will learn that Christopher Columbus explored at a very different time to Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart. They will develop their abilities to sequence simple timelines and to ask relevant questions about the history topic. Children will undertake a DT project to create their own story book about Columbus using levers and sliders. In PE children will be practicing their throwing and catching skills.

Later in the autumn term our learning focus will change to a geography topic, the Caribbean. Children will begin by learning about the different continents and oceans. They will develop their comparing and contrasting skills through studying human and physical features in the Caribbean and a European country. In Art children will learn about an artist called Zak Ove and create their own 3D sculpture based on his work. In PE children will learn how to move to different music and to create their own dance routines.

In year 2 we have PE on Tuesdays. Children should come to school in their PE kit on this day. Children have computing lessons on Monday in which they will learn the basic concepts of algorithms.

Each day children should change their reading book which they can read at home with family. Please enjoy this book with your child at home by reading it with them and chatting about it together. If you have any questions, please message Miss Cullen or Mr Shaw on Class Dojo.
