Green Park - Year 1

Miss Seaborne's Class

 

The year 1 children have settled in extremely well this term! Their emotional well-being and happiness have been prioritised through teaching and exploring emotions and self-regulation. Children will be taught to use the Zones of Regulation and how different parts of the brain work. They are given free choice time each day, where they choose to engage with the reading, writing, maths, investigation, fine motor, role play or creative areas. This has helped the children transition from early years to year 1. We have seen them develop their creativity and imagination, build on their social and emotional skills and independence in those learning areas which is fantastic!  

 

In year 1 this term, our big topic is…TOYS! This allows children to begin their introduction to history by exploring their own history and their family’s history. Children have been encouraged to think about all of the toys they have loved and then compare this to toys their parents may have had loved and toys from even longer ago. This will introduce children to the idea that things happened before they were here. This links perfectly with our science topic which is ‘everyday materials’. They will explore which materials were used to make toys in the past and how they are different/similar to the materials which are used to make toys today. We have lots of exciting experiments planned!

 

After October half-term, our learning focus will be the United Kingdom. Children will begin to explore maps of the UK and understand more about the country they live in. The lessons will be paired with a variety of high-quality texts. The texts will enable them to identify well-known landmarks in London and other parts of the UK. Children have computing lessons on Tuesday afternoons, where they will be learning the basic concepts of algorithms. They absolutely loved using Bee Bots this term, and we will continue to incorporate them in lessons to enhance their computational thinking.

 

Children have been reviewing 2 phonics sounds a day in order to support their progression in reading and writing. They practise their handwriting and letter formation each day. We are really impressed with how the children are getting on! Using the Read Write Inc scheme, we will continue to teach phonics each day, which will encourage them to become confident and happy writers and readers. Each week children will be given a Reading for Pleasure book that is handed out on a Tuesday and returned to school on the following Monday. They will also be bringing home a phonics book, which they are expected to read independently. We would love to know how they are getting on with their home reading, so please record any comments in their reading log.

 

Year 1 children will be taking part in PE on Friday afternoons, children are to come to school wearing their PE kits on this day. This half term, our PE focus is dance and next half term we will be throwing and catching.

 

The children’s enthusiasm and willingness to learn in all subjects has been amazing so far, we look forward to the rest of the school year ahead!
